Attorney Lilys D. McCoy received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at San Diego in June 1987 with Department Honors in Political Science. She graduated from the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law in May 1991 and was admitted to the California State Bar in December 1991. In 1999, she completed Gerry Spence's Trial Lawyers College in Dubois, Wyoming. The Trial Lawyers College consists of five weeks of intensive, participation-oriented training in trial advocacy with instruction by several nationally known trial attorneys. Ms. McCoy has practiced almost exclusively in the area of civil litigation since 1992 and has tried several jury trials and bench trials. Since 1999, Ms. McCoy has dedicated her practice to representing plaintiffs in consumer protection cases, including lemon law, automobile fraud, debt collection harassment cases, and Fair Credit Reporting Act cases.
In addition to her practice, Ms. McCoy participates in a number of local and state bar organizations. She reports on Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act ("Lemon Law") jury instructions for the Jury Instruction Committee of the Litigation Section of the State Bar of California. She was a co-author of the amicus brief submitted by the Consumer Attorneys of California to the California Supreme Court in the case of Gavaldon v. DaimlerChrysler Corporation (2004) 32 Cal.4th 1246. She was a member of the American Inns of Court (Enright Inn) from 1998 to 1999 and is an instructor for the San Diego Inn of Court Evidence Workshop (2003 through present). Ms. McCoy served as president of Lawyers Club of San Diego from 2002-2003 and as Chair of the Lawyers Club Judicial Endorsements Committee from 2003-2005. Ms. McCoy is currently the President of the Tom Homann Law Association. She is the District 9 Representative and Secretary to the Board of Directors of the Conference of Delegates of California Bar Associations. Ms. McCoy has spoken on consumer protection issues to community and legal organizations including Pan Asian Lawyers of San Diego and the NACA Consumer Law Symposium for the Southwest Navy Legal Service Office. In 2004 and 2005, Ms. McCoy helped coordinate the consumer law segment for the San Diego Superior Court, North County Division, Youth Day in Court. Ms. McCoy was named one of San Diego's "Top Attorneys" for 2006 in the San Diego Daily Transcript.
Ms. McCoy is a member of the National Association of Consumer Advocates, the Association of Business Trial Lawyers of San Diego, the San Diego County Bar Association (where she is a member of the Leadership Outreach Committee), the La Raza Lawyers Association of San Diego, Consumer Attorneys of California, Consumer Attorneys of San Diego, the American Bar Association and the American Trial Lawyers Association.
